(Visual arts, for context, covers activities like painting, drawing, photography, pottery, and textiles.) Each of these studies looked at more than 30 patients, each contending with chronic illness and cancer.

The Benefits of Art

Here’s how researchers went on to describe the impact visual art activities had on these patients…

* Art, for instance, filled gaps in their daily routines, helping to distract them from thoughts of their illness.

* Well-being improved, as negative emotions lessened and positive ones grew stronger.

* Medical outcomes saw improvement, with a noticeable trend toward reduced depression.

* Stress and anxiety decreased, while positive emotions became more prevalent.

* They experienced fewer feelings of distress and a reduction in negative emotions.

* There were also gains in feelings of flow and spontaneity, an improved ability to express grief, a stronger sense of positive identity, and more robust social cone ctions.

* I wonder if you agree, but these benefits, to me, don’t sound exclusive to hospital patients; they seem like something anyone could gain from. After all, who wouldn’t welcome less stress and anxiety, more positive emotions, or a lower chance of experiencing depression

And what’s more, the advantages of engaging with art aren’t just psychological.

The effects of art, music, and writing can actually manifest within your physical body too. Consider, for example, a study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine. It explored writing as a treatment for HIV patients and observed that this activity led to improvements in CD4+ lymphocyte counts.

Put simply, this means the act of writing truly affected the very cells within a patient’s body, boosting their immune system.

So, creating art isn’t just about feeling better; it also brings about tangible, physical shifts within your body.

Create More Than You Consume

The core message here is clear: the process of making art, whether you’re writing, painting, singing, dancing, or engaged in any similar creative endeavor, is genuinely good for you.

Art and creativity offer both physical and mental advantages. It’s about expressing yourself tangibly and putting something out into the world. I’ve been trying to engage with it more each week, and I’d certainly encourage you to consider doing the same.

In our constantly connected, always-on world, with its television, social media, and on-demand content, it’s incredibly easy to spend entire days simply consuming information, merely reacting to the deluge of inputs that bombard your life.

Art, however, provides both an outlet and a release from all that. Take a moment to disregard those incoming signals and instead, generate something outward. Produce a piece of work. Express yourself somehow. So long as you are contributing, rather than just consuming, anything you do has the potential to become a work of art.

Open a blank document and simply start typing. Take pen to paper and sketch something. Pick up your camera and capture an image. Turn the music up and let yourself dance. Begin a conversation, and make it a meaningful exchange.

Build something. Share something. Craft something. Create more art. Your health and happiness will likely improve, and we will all ultimately benefit from it.

Take these findings, for example, from five visual arts studies highlighted in a particular review.
